Wake up call & Underneath the makeup

The U.S Faces a Wake Up Call


Stock Market Crash of 1929: Soon after WW1, the United States was experiencing a new era of optimism. Technology was welcoming instruments such as airplanes and the radio. At the same time society was changing too. Women were beginning to have more freedom and a middle class was evolving. People seemed to have more money and started to increase their investments, especially in the stock market. Life was a party- and after a while parties can get expensive. Many people were becoming too confident and investing high quantities of stock. At first the market's prices were had reached a high plateau that seemed stable the the time until October 29th, 1929. On this day, also know as Black Tuesday, the stock market prices collapsed which began financial turmoil for many people across the country. 




Underneath the Makeup


Blackface performers were a big hit in variety shows in New York City, during the 19th century. The performances were also known as the blackface Minstrelsy. Minstrelsy is another term for comical skit. Basically, the blackface was makeup that appeared on the white actors who would imitate a stereotypical perspective of African American speech, song and dance.
