An ambitious film maker

Able Gance was a multi-talented man for his time. He was a French film director, producer, writer and actor during the 20th century. Gance was interested in discovering innovative techniques with film and sound. He explored using the camera in unique ways such as extreme closeups and moving the camera in obscure ways (handheld)- once he even strapped a camera to a horse. He also experimented with color, sound and editing. Some of his handheld techniques are seen in one of his most famous silent films, NapolĂ©on.
