Video art

Every time I try to post a video, it doesn't seem to work!

Anyhow- I wanted my video art project to reflect something that I learned from the class this semester. I can really say that taking this class really opened my eyes in regards to what art is or can be...
Everyone's projects blew me away!

Have a wonderful break!! See ya next semester :)

Femininity in pop culture

Pipilotti Rist

Is known for her video works and multimedia installations that explore female sexuality and media culture.
Around the 1980s, she was a member of the experimental post-punk group Les Reines Prochaines. At this time she continued to explore the manipulation of the female voice and body through performance combined with the influence of pop culture techniques.
In the 1990s , Rist began to merge to a new form of art called video installation. During this time she combined material from the television and advertising and combined it with the history of feminist video work.

Many of Rist's works focus on fantasy and desire as well as the woman's role in pop culture. He obscure, innovative and own desire is what has made her on of the most recognizable names in contemporary video art.

Other artists that advocate for the female gender's role in Media performance is Orlan. She re-sculpted her body using plastic surgery during her performance art pieces. Altering her features was common in the process of making her creations.  She uses her body as a canvas for this type art to question beauty in society.

Joseph Beuys

Joseph Beuys
1921-1986

Humanism, Social philosophy and anthroposophy are the concepts Joseph Beuys used to create his artwork. He was a German performance artist, sculptor, installation artist, graphic artist and art theorist.

During the 1940s Beuys was active in the military during WWII. He was wounded several times and was even held as a prisoner of war under british power. After the war, he decided to focus and dedicate his time to artwork. Many of his pieces reflect his military experience.

During the 1960s, He was also the professor of 'monumental sculpture' at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf- where he studied art after the war in the 1950s.

In 1967, Beuys founded the political german student party and founded the Free International University for Creativity and Interdisciplinary Research.

Beuys was also known for his performance art pieces. He would use sound, time, and objects as materials in his moving sculptures.

performance art

The theme of my performance art piece is "Tech-less".....
Unfortunately I came up with my idea after seeing and hearing about people being homeless...reinforcing the idea of being helpless. Many people throughout Tampa and St. Augustine panhandle...so I decided to give it try but instead, I was tech-less and without my cellphone. I was trying to send the message that people rely so heavily on technology that we feel helpless when we don't have it...especially our cellphones.

Leigh Bowery

If you're familiar with Lady Gaga, then you've seen her outrageous outfits! I've always questioned her image and whether or not it's manufactured by her contract or herself. Then after class, I realized that there have been many major influences on her and many others in the music industry.

Leigh Bowery is one of those influences. He was a performance artist, club promotor, actor, pop star, model and fashion designer. He is very well known for his unique and crazy costume designs and makeup! I can definitely see where Gaga is coming from now!  He has also impacted many others such as Boy George and the Scissor Sisters. Aside from fashion he also promoted a night club called Taboo in London and also contributed to many art and fashion shows. Leigh Bowery was a live sculpture.
